A comprehensive eye exam in Mississauga covers far more than just your vision — here’s everything you need to know before you book. If you’ve been putting off booking an eye exam because you’re not sure what’s involved, you’re not alone. Many people assume an eye exam in Mississauga is just about reading letters off a chart — but a comprehensive eye exam is much more than that. It’s a complete assessment of both your vision and the overall health of your eyes.
At Illusion Eyewear & Eyecare in Erin Mills Town Centre, Mississauga, our optometrist Dr. Angela Fu performs thorough eye exams that check not just how well you see, but whether your eyes are healthy on the inside. Here’s exactly what to expect from start to finish.
Before You Arrive
A little preparation goes a long way. Before your appointment, gather the following:
- Your current glasses or contact lenses (bring both if you wear each)
- A list of any medications you’re currently taking — some can affect eye pressure and overall eye health
- Your OHIP card if you’re eligible for a covered exam
- The name of your family doctor if Dr. Fu needs to refer you for further care
Children 19 and under are covered by OHIP once per year. Seniors 65 and over are covered every 18 months. Adults between 20 and 64 are not covered by OHIP for routine eye exams — the cost at Illusion Eyewear & Eyecare is $95, which many extended health plans reimburse in full or in part.
Not sure if you need one? Read our guide to the 10 signs you need an eye exam.
Step 1 — Your Vision History
Your exam begins with a conversation. Dr. Fu will ask about your vision history, any symptoms you’ve noticed recently — like blurry vision, headaches, eye strain, or difficulty seeing at night — and whether you have a family history of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetes.
This isn’t small talk. Your answers directly shape which tests Dr. Fu prioritizes during your exam. If you’ve been squinting at screens all day, she’ll pay close attention to your focusing system. If glaucoma runs in your family, eye pressure becomes a key measurement.
Step 2 — Visual Acuity Testing
This is the part most people recognize — reading letters off a chart. Visual acuity testing measures how clearly you can see at distance and near, and helps determine whether you need a prescription update.
What most people don’t realize is that visual acuity is just one piece of the puzzle. Even if you can read the chart perfectly, you may still have eye health issues that need attention — which is exactly why the rest of the exam matters so much.
Step 3 — Refraction
Using a phoropter — that large device with multiple lenses that flips back and forth — Dr. Fu will fine-tune your prescription by asking you to compare different lens combinations. “Which is clearer, one or two?” This is how your eyeglass or contact lens prescription is determined.
Getting your refraction right is crucial. An incorrect prescription doesn’t just blur your vision — it can cause headaches, eye fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, especially if you spend long hours on a computer or driving.
Step 4 — Eye Pressure Measurement
A quick, painless test measures the pressure inside your eyes. Elevated eye pressure can be an early sign of glaucoma — a condition that damages the optic nerve and can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.
Here’s the important part: glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages. You won’t feel the pressure. You won’t notice the vision loss until it’s advanced. This is one of the most important reasons to get regular eye exams even when you feel like your vision is perfectly fine.
Step 5 — Ocular Health Evaluation
This is where a comprehensive eye exam earns its name. Dr. Fu examines the internal and external structures of your eyes — including the retina, optic nerve, macula, and blood vessels. Conditions like diabetic eye disease, cataracts, and macular degeneration can be detected here, often long before you notice any vision changes.
Your eyes can also reveal signs of systemic health conditions. Changes in the blood vessels at the back of the eye can indicate high blood pressure or diabetes — sometimes before a patient has even been diagnosed. It’s one of the reasons regular eye exams are considered an important part of your overall healthcare routine.
Step 6 — Your Results and Recommendations
Once the exam is complete, Dr. Fu will walk you through your results in plain language — no medical jargon. She’ll update your prescription if needed and make personalized recommendations for lenses, follow-up care, or referrals if anything requires further attention.
If you need new glasses or contact lenses, our registered opticians at Illusion Eyewear are right in the store and ready to help you choose the perfect frames and lenses for your lifestyle, face shape, and prescription. You can go from eye exam to new glasses in a single visit.

What About Eye Exams for Children?
Children’s eye exams are just as important as adult exams — and in many ways, even more critical. Vision problems that go undetected in children can affect reading, learning, coordination, and confidence in school. The tricky part is that kids often don’t know their vision is off because they’ve never experienced anything different.
Dr. Angela Fu has extensive experience examining young patients and makes the process calm, gentle, and completely stress-free for children of all ages — including those who are nervous or have never had an eye exam before. She knows how to work with kids who can’t yet read a chart, using non-verbal tests and child-friendly techniques to get accurate results.
Children 19 and under are fully covered by OHIP for one eye exam per year — so there’s no reason to wait. Early detection of conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and myopia (nearsightedness) can make a significant difference in your child’s visual development and quality of life.
If your child is squinting, sitting too close to screens, rubbing their eyes frequently, or struggling in school, an eye exam is the right first step. Learn more in our guide to eye exams for kids in Mississauga.
