It’s one of the most common questions we hear: “How long is this going to take?” Whether you’re squeezing an appointment into a lunch break or bringing a child who won’t sit still for long, knowing what to expect time-wise makes everything easier to plan.
Here’s a straightforward answer.
The Short Answer
A comprehensive eye exam at Illusion Eyewear & Eyecare in Mississauga typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.
What Affects the Length?
Several factors can make an exam shorter or longer:
- First visit: New patients take a little longer because Dr. Fu establishes a complete baseline — vision history, health history, and a thorough assessment of both eyes.
- Follow-up visits: If you’re a returning patient with no new concerns, the exam is often closer to 30 minutes.
- Age: Children’s exams can vary depending on the child’s age and comfort level.
- Dilated exam: If Dr. Fu recommends dilating your pupils for a more detailed look at the back of your eye, add another 20 to 30 minutes for the drops to take effect. This isn’t always required.
- Existing conditions: If you have diabetes, glaucoma risk, or other health factors, the exam may be more thorough and take a bit longer.
What About Waiting?
Your time is important to us and we do everything we can to stay on schedule. Occasionally a patient emergency means Dr. Fu needs more time — we appreciate your understanding if that ever happens. If you’re running behind yourself, just give us a call and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
After the Exam
Once the exam is done, Dr. Fu reviews the results with you clearly and without rushing. If you need a new prescription, you’ll have it in hand before you leave.
